Kids Love Ohio

I love to travel and do fun things. However, in today’s economy we are all trying to find things to do that are closer, so that we are spending less money. Enter in the Kids Love Ohio book!

I found this book at the library and I am so happy that I did. This book divides our state by geographical area and lists tons of great activities to do for the whole family.

We were traveling a few months ago and I took this book with me. During the trip, I realized that there was a state park nearby with hiking trails and great scenery. So, we stopped and hiked for a little bit. It was great and fun!

The absolutely wonderful thing about this book is that there are more! You can visit the website the authors have created, Kids Love Travel, and find many more resources, like a list of all the travel guides available, information about the authors, a page created to help homeschoolers, and more!

I will definitely be saving this site and book for future reference!

The 2,000 Best Games & Activities

I have found so many great books already in my child preparation reading. Here is another one that I will be referring to in the future, for sure!

The 2,000 Best Games & Activities is for children birth through 8 and is full of so many great things to do with your children to teach them important skills.

The book is divided by skills, they are communication, concentration, curiosity, decision making, kindness, physical ability, and playfulness. Then each skill is divided by age. And, as an added bonus there are some great resources in the back, like a list of great toys for children at each age.

I learned so much from reading this book and will be referring to it once we are parents and want to encourage these skills in our children.

Caring for Your Baby and Young Child

This book has been by far the most educational book for me. I would recommend Caring for Your Baby and Young Child to any first time parent! I learned so much reading this book!

The American Academy of Pediatrics says,

With more than 4 million copies in print, our flagship parenting book has shaped the health and well-being of children for nearly 20 years.

This book definitely helped me tons! I was nervous about some of the basic skills of parenting, but this book really helped to ease some of my worries.

I have babysat before, but it isn’t the same as parenting and having children in your care 24/7. This book opened my eyes to many things that I hadn’t thought about, like toilet training, dietary needs, signs of developmental delays, many things that first time parents don’t really think about, but they still need to know!

This book is a must for parents!

Adopting in America

As most of you know, Michael and I are in the early stages of adopting. I know that this process can take long, however, I want to do everything in my power to make it as quick as possible. So, to learn how to do that, I read the book Adopting in America.

This book is supposed to teach you ‘How to Adopt Withing One Year.’ This book was filled with a lot of information!

For me, I guess I knew more than I thought. I didn’t really learn anything new from this book that would help us adopt within one year.

I had researched enough that I was already doing what the author was saying to do. So, I would recommend this book to couples who are in the very beginning stages of thinking about adopting and haven’t really researched it very much or taken any action.

This book lays out the options and pros and cons of each option and then gives a very lengthy list of agencies and attorneys in each state that you could work with. This book is meant to help you decide which route you want to take to adopt and assist in finding someone to help you do it.

I would not recommend this book to people who have started the process of adoption and have researched it, you will already know everything the author says.

Damsels in Distress

I have heard such great things about author Martha Peace, so I decided to read her book Damsels in Distress. I am not disappointed at all!!! Martha Peace writes in a way that is conversational and easy to read, but yet challenges you to live for Christ.

This book is designed to offer biblical solutions for problems women face. There are three parts: Biblical Solutions for Problems with Others, Biblical Solutions for Problems with Ourselves, and Biblical Solutions for Problems with the World.

All three sections were great, but for me personally, I learned the most from part 3, which discussed the feminist influence, the role of women in the church, and trials. Not that the first two parts weren’t great, because they were great, the last part just really spoke to me.

Growing up in the past 20 years, I have been greatly influenced by the feminism movement, more than I would like to admit. I would have been greatly shocked to know that I dream about being a stay at home mom if I knew that in middle school. However, Christ has showed me my true calling!

God designed us women on purpose (And the men too)! He wanted us to be nurturing and loving. When we accept God’s calling and purpose for our life, that is when we will find true fulfilment! Not in getting a master’s degree or a high position in a company, those are things that the feminism movement want us to desire. However, gaining status and certain educational levels, and so on will not give us fulfilment or an identity.

As Christian women, our identity is found in Christ! Through Him we will find fulfillment.

(Sorry I went off on a tangent there) This book was so encouraging and inspiring and challenging. I would definitely recommend this book to you!

Here are some other topics that Martha Peace talks about: gossip, manipulation, hurt feelings, vanity, PMS, legalism, and more!
