What’s On Your Nightstand?

What’s On Your Nightstand? is a monthly meme on the fourth Tuesday of every month from 5 Minutes for Books.

There are several different ways to participate (Click here to learn more about that). I am going to participate each month by sharing what books I have read and written a review for in the last month and what books I would like to read in the next month.

In addition to the following list, I also have a master list of books I have read in 2011 here.

I cannot believe how long it has been since I joining in on this meme…

Books I Have Read since March 23rd:

The Silent Seduction of Self-Talk – I highly recommend this book, but make sure you plan on taking it slowly and enjoying the depth of the topic!

Pearl Girls – I would definitely recommend this book to any Christian woman who wants to be encouraged or read wonderful stories about God’s goodness!

The Power of Words – I found this bible study to be extremely refreshing. Each day is super short, I think I never spent more than 5 minutes reading. However, each day left me pondering and meditating on how I use my mouth.

The Gospel According to LOST – I am sad to say that I am quite disappointed in this book. I felt like the back of the book should be an overview for a different book. A book that had depth and created discussion with the reader.

The Sword – I personally loved this book! I literally could not put this book down. I couldn’t wait to know what was going to happen next.

Sleep, It Does A Family Good – In this book, the author educates the reader on much to do with the topic of sleep. I learned a lot about how sleep benefits our bodies, and also how the lack of sleep harms us greatly. I really did learn!

Becoming a Young Woman Who Pleases God – This is a great book to introduce teen ladies into what it means to be a Godly Woman, and how what she does now impacts her future.

Purity: A Godly Woman’s Adornment – I would highly recommend Purity to any Christian woman, teen and up, who wants to dive deeper into the topic of purity!

Radical – I can honestly say that after reading this book, I know that my life will never be the same!

Life, In Spite of Me – This was a quick read, partly due to shorter more manageable chapters, but mainly due to the story that encompasses each page! A story of hope and life and a future!

Sun Stand Still – Well, when I read Radical last year, it changed my life. Reading Sun Stand Still has had the same effect!

Love & Respect for a Lifetime – This is a very casual book that you can just pick up, read a few pages, and continue later. It also looks beautiful, so it would set nicely on a coffee or end table.

The Discipline of Spiritual Discernment – This book not only reinforced my belief that our faith should impact every aspect of our lives, but it also was very encouraging and practical.

Dancing with the One You Love – This book is truly a great resource on submission, and marriage in general. I would definitely recommend it!

Fearlessly Feminine – I found this book to be so inspirational, and it really helped me to remember the point. The point of me being a woman and embracing my roles, is to live for God and put Him on display!

*I am hoping to start joining in monthly again, that way my posts won’t be so long!!!

Want have you read recently???

Books I Have Read since February 23rd:

Family Feasts for $75 A Week

I loved reading through this book and very much took my time to soak in all the information that this mom of 10 has to share! I really think that even the seasoned money saving women will find at least one new way to save money. I personally, found many, many tips.

The Creative Family

One thing that I really liked about this book was that it really didn’t include tons of toys or fancy equipment and such. I felt like it really gave parents ideas of how to nurture creativity very naturally.

Cheap. Fast. Good!

There are definitely a ton of recipes in this book! I found it to actually be quite overwhelming at first. However, once I started looking through it, I found a few recipes to try.

The Marriage Project

Honestly, I didn’t realize how little I thought about our marriage during the day. Through reading the book, I loved having daily reminders to do something to cultivate love in my marriage. Some ideas were to text your husband just to say you love him, give him a massage, let him control the remote, eat by candlelight, etc…

Busy Mom’s Bible

When I first heard of this book, I thought it was a great idea for new moms or new Christians that are moms, or Christian moms that are struggling to find time in their day to be with God. The reason I say that is because I think that this Bible stands as a great resource to help women learn the habit of being in the Word.

The Time of Your Life

As women and keepers of the home, time management is a MUST! However, sometimes it is just so hard. So, I thought I would read a time management book and share my thoughts. When looking for a book to read, I just loved this book’s tagline, Finding God’s Rest in Your Busy Schedule.

Books I Have Read since January 26th:

Sacred Marriage

This book isn’t your typical marriage book! It doesn’t focus on all the practical stuff as much as it does the spiritual stuff (The important stuff!). For example, the book’s tagline is, “What If God Designed Marriage to Make Us Holy More Than to Make Us Happy.” And that is truly what this book is all about, how marriage can be a tool that God uses to make us more holy.

Choosing Forgiveness

WOW! It is not that often that a book really challenges me like this book did…In a good way, though! Forgiveness is such a HUGE topic.

Mirror Mirror…Am I Beautiful?

This is a great book for any young woman who might be struggling with body image, or modesty, or purity. I would definitely recommend it as a starting place!

Embracing Your Freedom

Above all else, this book has offered me the challenge to not just sit and here this devastating news, but TO ACT! Not, to just sit and live my life in my “bubble,” but to be a part of the solution, and fight for the freedom of those all around the world, physical and spiritual.

Books I Have Read since December 22nd:

The Woman I am Becoming
This is a very good book for twenty-something women. And I really think that it helps to reach each woman no matter where in her twenties or life she is. I found this book to be encouraging and challenging.

The One-Day Way

This is a very encouraging read that, as the cover states, helps you change your mind set to think “Today Is All the Time You Need to Lose All the Weight You Want.” I was highly encouraged by Chantel Hobbs’ attitude about focusing on today, moving on from the past, and not worrying about the future. As the foreword (pg. vii) states, “You can start your transformation today, because today is the day.”

The New Moody Atlas of the Bible

My husband loves geography and he is thrilled with the additional of this book to our library! He has been using it a lot during his study time and he has even been picking it up to read for fun! I see this book helping us immensely in our personal study and, when we have children, helping us teach them!

Dug Down Deep

I loved how this book helped me to think about these things and realize that I always want to be growing in my relationship with Christ and growing to be more like Him. And the more I learn about Him and His Greatness, the more I realize how much I need Him active in my personal life!

The story lines of these books are so precious. Little Cub is inquisitive and asks question about life and what is going on around him.

Treasured

I found this book to be extremely encouraging and a reminder of God’s presence in our life. The author does a great job of reminding us of God’s promises and helps us learn a little bit more about God through this book.

30 Days to Taming Your Tongue

Sometimes, I hate to admit, I can be very loose with my words. I often find myself regretting things I say and how they affect my husband and others that are close to me. I have seen great strides in myself over the past few years, but I still have more room to grow!

The Treasure Principle

This book constantly points to the eternal rewards for giving and makes the reader meditate on the awe and amazement of Heaven. This book was very encouraging and challenging and inspiring all at the same time!

Fireproof Your Marriage

This Bible Study is a great tool to help married couples join together and grow closer together. Each week there is a movie clip, and discussion questions for the whole class. Then each week at home there is a section for the husband and wife to do separately and then one to do together.

99 Ways to Fight Worry and Stress

I found many good ideas to help me fight the worry and stress in my life. Some of my favorite involved having friends. I am so blessed to have a great close friend who helps me to calm down and brings me back to reality. Friends are great tools to help keep worry and stress out of your life!

More Than a Match

The authors share how online dating sites, are not always great determiners of a healthy, long lasting relationship, and then tell you what to look for in a relationship that will help it succeed, long term. I really liked the tone of this book and the authors’ conversational writing. I would definitely recommend this to younger adults who are in a serious dating relationship, engaged, or are looking for their life long partner.

For Women Only

This book is based on a groundbreaking national survey and over one thousand personal interviews of men. It was actually kind of funny, throughout the book there are survey questions and answers, and I found myself surprised by the responses and asking Michael if the same was true for him. Which he said yes!

Books I Plan To Read by 2010:
